Concerns / Complaints

The Stowe Police Department is here to help you. Anyone with a question or concern about a police contact is encouraged to call the non-emergency number, (802) 253-7126, and ask to speak with the shift supervisor. Many questions about police procedure can be answered and resolved by a phone call.

All complaints against Stowe Police Department personnel will be investigated in accordance with the procedures outlined below.

Please keep in mind that anonymous complaints limit our ability to investigate or follow up with you as part of the inquiry and as to our findings.

Investigation Procedures

Complaints against police department employees will be directed to the Chief of Police. The complaint may or may not be handled internally depending on the scope of the investigation. A complaint investigation will usually include a review of all applicable reports, policies and procedures, examination of any evidence or medical records, and interviews with all parties and witnesses involved. This process may take several weeks. However, an uncomplicated inquiry may only take a few days. Regardless of the situation, the complainant will be notified of the outcome or results of the investigation, subject to privacy rights and applicable laws.

Responsibility - Yours and Ours

The Stowe Police Department considers all complaints against its employees to be very serious and actively pursues investigations of alleged misconduct. To assist us, you should provide all important facts and information. Please be confident that your complaint is based on facts.

If for some reason you do not think your complaint was reviewed properly or you do not feel comfortable approaching the Police Department directly, you may contact the Town Manager at csafford@stowevt.gov. You must fill out an Inquiry / Complaint form to ensure we receive the facts as you understand them and to minimize the potential for false claims.

Please be mindful that false reporting of an incident in an attempt to unjustly subject a Stowe Police Officer to undeserved discipline or slander, or to place his / her employment in jeopardy, can result in criminal charges or civil liability.
